Interview S.J. Wright

As part of the blogtour hosted by Bewitching booktours I got the chance to read and review The vampire's warden written by S.J. Wright. As a bonus I also got the chance to do an interview with the author of this amazing book!

A warm welcome to S.J. Wright!

1. Can you tell a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in a small city in northern Indiana called Mishawaka, lived in Indianapolis for awhile, and when my husband and I got married, my oldest son and I moved down to Louisiana where he was working at the time.  We now live in the Dallas area and have another son, Cameron, who was born with spina bifida in 2006.  His smile can light up an entire room.

2.  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

When I was around twelve, my Mom handed me a paperback copy of My Friend Flicka.  It was the first long book I’d ever read.  It sparked something inside me, transported me into a different place and into somebody else’s mind and skin.  I fell madly in love with books and decided that if I could do it, someday I would write books.

3.   What comes first? The story, the charater(s) or the idea for the novel?

Usually, when an idea takes fire for me, it starts with a single line of dialog that just pops into my head.  A simple line like, “I just can’t do this anymore.”  It sets off a whirlwind of possibilities in my head.  Maybe the speaker is a wife who’s come to the end of her rope and wants to leave her husband.  Maybe it’s a grandfather who’s been keeping a secret from his family.  I settle on one possibility and then work out the characters, conflict, etc.

4.   What would be your favorite past time activity, when you are not writing?

There’s one thing that I wish I could do again.  Now that I’m a Mom and we don’t have a pool, it makes it difficult.  When my parents had a pool, I used to float with my face to the sky and just take deep breaths as the sunlight filtered down through the treetops.  The only sounds were birds chirping and the whistle of wind through the trees.  It was magical.  Hopefully one day I’ll get to do that again.

5. Are there any writers ou there that have inspired you?

There are lot of writers who have inspired me.  Margaret Mitchell comes first, because she had such an amazing array of characters in Gone with the Wind.  I still love that book.

6. Can you tell a little more about your book: The vampire’s warden?

The Vampire’s Warden is a story about a young woman who discovers that there are secrets about her family that will force her to carry a kind of responsibility that she never knew existed.  She’s so strong, but she also carries a lot of anger around with her.

7. What inspired you to write this story?

I’m a big fan of vampire fiction.  I’ve read Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Stephenie Meyer, and dozens of others.  There’s something so wonderful about the idea that a creature who exists on human blood might crave companionship and love from humans.

8. Which Character did you enjoy writing the most and why?

I had the most fun writing about Michael.  He’s so sarcastic and dark.  He has such a mysterious past.  I can’t wait to write more about what he’s been through and who he’s met.

9. If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would you choose and why?

That’s a difficult question.  Choosing between Alex and Michael, I would probably choose Michael.  I’m sure the dinner conversation would be very interesting.

10. Do you get a lot of responses from your readers?

I do!  I love hearing from them.  Whenever a reader mentions that they want more of Michael, I can’t help but grin.

11. What are you currently working on?

I’m in the process of writing The Vampire’s Curse, which will be the second book in the Undead in Brown County series.  I’m planning to release either three or four books total at this time.  There has been some talk of doing a longer series, though.  I’m considering the idea seriously.  I love these characters.

12. Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Everybody has been so wonderful and supportive.  I love you guys!
